Cal Poly's Reid Wins Second Weekly Honor of 2007; Trio Shares Award on Women's End

Cal Poly's Phillip Reid (Oxnard, Calif.) took home his second Big West Athlete of the Year award with an impressive effort on the national stage, while a trip of women’s athletes shared the weekly accolades.

Reid led the Mustang squad to a 10th place finish in a field of 40 at the NCAA Pre-Nationals in Terre Haute, Ind. The senior finished 22nd overall with a time of 23:46.4 on the 8K course, the top time in the Big West this season. The meet included 14 clubs currently ranked in the top 30 of the USTFCCCA men’s poll.

On the women's side, Long Beach State's Sarah Apgar, UC Santa Barbara's Bethany Nickless and UC Irvine's Laura Olvera shared the weekly award.

Apgar (San Diego, Calif.) continued her stellar season with a second place finish at the Santa Clara Invitational. The junior finished the 5K course in a personal and program best 17:21, besting the old school mark by five seconds and her seasonal mark by 57 seconds.

Nickless (Huntington Beach, Calif.) ran well at the NCAA Pre-Nationals, leading the Gauchos to a solid 11th place finish in the 38-team field. The senior finished the 6K course in 20:49, a new personal best and the second best 6K time in the Big West this season. Olvera (Whittier, Calif.) has continued to operate at an All-America level after finishing ninth in a field of 322 runners at the Chile Pepper Festival in Fayetteville, Ark. Her time of 21:13.0 led all UCI runners and helped the Anteaters finish fourth in a field of 41 squads, including the host #8 Arkansas.
