Impressive numbers by both Cal Poly's Jaclyn Houston and Cal State Fullerton's Brittany Moore earned them Big West Co-Player of the Week accolades, for the week ending Oct. 14. This is the first honor of the season and second of their career for both for Houston and Moore.
Largely due to the explosiveness of the middle blocker from Granite Bay, Calif. , Cal Poly picked up two wins last week to extended its win streak to three and tie the Mustangs for first in the Big West Conference. In Thursday's match at UC Santa Barbara, Houston fired a .391 hitting percentage, while collecting 10 kills and 12 total blocks (2 solo, 10 assists). Her 12 blocks were a season high and the second-best total by a Big West player this year.
Two nights later Houston showcased her power once again, blasting a .625 hitting percentage (11-1-16) to lead all players and establishing a new season high. She also picked up six blocks and one service ace against the Anteaters. For the week, she led the Mustangs in hitting percentage (.487), solo blocks (3), assisted blocks (15) and total blocks (18). Her 2.57 blocks per game mark was 1.23 better than her 1.34 season average entering the week.
Moore pounded 46 kills over two matches last week against UC Irvine and UC Riverside, which was capped off by a career-high effort on Friday night with 30 kills. In the Titan-Highlander matchup, the Orange, Calif., native became the first person in the Big West to record 30 kills this season and the first Titan in eight years to accomplish this feat. Over the two matches, Moore committed just eight attack errors in 119 chances and picked up two double-doubles along the way. Thursday night against UC Irvine she collected 16 kills and 12 digs and then picked up an additional 30 kills and 15 digs on Friday against UC Riverside. For the week, the 5-11 outside hitter posted a .319 hitting percentage and averaged 5.11 kills and 3.00 digs per game.
