Cal State Northridge junior Jonathan Heard (Inglewood, CA/Dorsey HS) earned Big West Men's Basketball Player of the Week honors as his play helped the Matadors to a 2-0 record and move into the upper echelon of the conference standings.
Heard averaged 19.0 points, 7.5 rebounds and 2.5 steals per game while shooting 48.3 percent (14-of-29) from the field and 90.9 percent (10-of-11) from the free throw line for the week.
He scored 14 points and added game-highs of seven rebounds and four steals in CSUN's 67-61 victory versus UC Irvine on Thursday. Heard notched six of his points during a pivotal 11-0 run that turned a 53-51 deficit with 5:33 to play into a 62-53 lead with 2:40 remaining.
The Matadors snapped Long Beach State's nine-game win streak with a 90-83 triumph on Saturday. Heard played a large role in the win, matching his season high with 24 points on 8-of-15 shooting from the field. He also sank 8-of-9 from the line while corraling eight rebounds and dishing out four assists.
The 6-6 forward has now reached double figures in scoring in nine straight games. This is Heard's first career Player of the Week honor.
