Cal State Fullerton sophomore Crystal Vieyra (Stanton, CA/Pacifica HS) and Cal Poly freshman Melissa Pura (Salinas, CA/Notre Dame HS) were named Big West Softball Co-Players of the Week after posting enormous offensive efforts at the plate.
Vieyra, a utility player, hit .833 (5-for-6) in a doubleheader sweep of Long Beach State Saturday. She set career highs with four hits, three runs scored and five RBI in the Titans' 16-0 victory in game two. In that game, she belted two home runs to help the Titans tie a school record for most home runs hit in a game with four. She slugged an amazing 1.833 for the week, which included a 1-for-2 effort with two RBI in game one.
Pura led the Mustang offense in a sweep of Cal State Northridge, knocking in 10 of the team's 27 runs in the series. She had multiple RBI in each game and all five of her hits went for extra bases. For the week, she hit .556 (5-for-9) with five runs scored and 10 RBI. In the series finale, Pura went 2-for-3 with a career-high six RBI, thanks in large part to a fourth inning grand slam.
Cal State Fullerton junior Candice Baker (Buena Park, CA/Cypress HS) earned Big West Softball Pitcher of the Week accolades after shutting down rival Long Beach State in a doubleheader sweep.
The right-hander did not allow a run and yielded just one hit in a combined 7.2 innings of work, striking out nine and walking three in a pair of Titan routs. The 49ers managed to hit just .048 off her for the week.
Baker came on in relief with CSF owning a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning of game one, but shut the door on LBSU, which had two runners on base at the time of her entrance. Baker escaped the inning after getting Kourtnee Gervasi to line into a double play.
She started game two and had a no hitter through the first four innings, but lost that bid on an LBSU leadoff single in the fifth. She struck out six in the 16-0 win, increasing her league-leading strikeout total to 180. She is also second in the Big West with 16 victories.
