Cal Poly's Van Linge Goes Undefeated In Singles and Doubles

Cal Poly senior Brett Van Linge (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA) garnered Big West Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week honors after helping the Mustangs to a pair of victories at a neutral site in Sedona, Ariz.

The Mustangs toppled Northern Arizona (7-0) and Montana (6-1) to raise their record to 10-8 on the season. Van Linge played his part in the wins, beating both of his opponents at No. 3 singles. He defeated NAU's Trent Hayward 6-0, 6-2, then outlasted the Grizzlies' Colin Dektar 6-3, 7-6. Van Linge is 12-12 overall in singles.

At No. 1 doubles, the potent duo of Van Linge and John Nguyen won for the 12th and 13th straight time, improving their overall record to 19-5 on the season. They had no trouble with NAU's Gareth Ducray and Henrik Lilla, winning 8-1. They had to fight just slightly harder to dispatch Montana's Dektar and Josh Katz 8-3.

Koichumanova and Cal State Northridge Complete Undefeated Homestand

Cal State Northridge sophomore Kanykey Koichumanova (Bishkek, Kyrgystan) wrapped up Big West Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week honors after moving her team's and personal winning streak to a season-high seven straight matches.

Koichumanova defeated Tara Hartness of Wofford 6-1, 6-3 and rolled past UC Riverside's Yasaman Sakhakorn 6-0, 6-0, both wins coming at No. 2 singles. In so doing, she helped the Matadors complete a perfect 7-0 homestand while defeating all seven of her opponents in straight sets and losing just a total of 18 games. Koichumanova improved her record to 11-5 in singles this season.

The Matadors also got a strong performance from Koichumanova and partner Canna Furuta from the No. 2 doubles position. The duo won 8-2 over Wofford's Adriane Hodges and Ashley Page and 8-1 against the Highlanders' Sakhakorn and Catrisha Cabanilla. Koichumanova and Furuta have won six matches in a row.
