Brotman Helps UC Santa Barbara to Upset of No. 75 Dartmouth
UC Santa Barbara senior Nick Brotman (Toronto, Canada) received Big West Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week honors for his role in helping the Gauchos to an upset of No. 75 Dartmouth last Saturday.
The No. 1 singles player for the Gauchos posted a 6-3, 6-3 win over the Big Green's Dave Waslen, avenging a defeat from last year.
Brotman also teamed with Anders Dalskov at the No. 1 doubles spot to edge out Waslen and Steve McGaughey 8-6 to help the Gauchos capture the doubles point.
Grady Continues To Sizzle For Nationally Ranked Long Beach State
Long Beach State freshman Hannah Grady (Coventry, England) collected Big West Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week honors after defeating her fourth nationally ranked opponent and playing her part in extending her team's winning streak to 14 consecutive matches.
The 49ers, ranked No. 20 nationally, have benefited greatly from the freshman's arrival to the program. She has won 11 straight singles matches and is ranked No. 67 in the country. In LBSU's 4-3 victory against No. 56-ranked Kansas State on March 20, Grady won a key match against No. 89 Tamar Kvaratskhelia, dispatching her with ease 6-1, 6-3.
Grady also captured a 6-0, 6-2 win over Illinois-Chicago's Callan Smith, as the 49ers rolled to a 7-0 victory on March 21. She is 12-4 overall at the No. 1 position this season.
Grady's success has not been limited to singles. In doubles play, she and fellow freshman Jessica Weeks have combined for a 14-0 record this spring to climb all the way to the nation's No. 24 ranking. At No. 2 doubles, the duo defeated Kansas State's Kvaratskhelia and Maria Perevoschikova 8-4, and Illinois Chicago's Iris Jaklin and Christina Oum 8-1. For the season, Grady and Weeks are 12-0 at No. 2 doubles and 2-0 at the No. 1 spot.
