Sophomore Candice Baker scored the only run for the Titans on the day and kept her team close with a strong effort in the circle, but Cal State Fullerton was eliminated from the NCAA Regionals with 6-0 and 3-1 losses to UCLA on Sunday.
Cal Poly freshman Stephanie Tam (Rancho Palos Verdes, CA) garnered Big West Softball Player of the Week honors after a solid day at the plate in a doubleheader sweep of Santa Clara on Sunday.
The 5-1 utility player hit .750 (6-for-8) for the doubleheader, scoring three runs and tallying four RBI. She also had a stolen base as the Mustangs toppled the Broncos 11-6 in game one and 4-1 in an eight-inning game two victory.
Tam went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBI in the first game. She duplicated that effort with another three hits in game two, scoring one run.
For the season, Tam has scored 14 runs with two doubles, two triples and one home run. She also has nine RBI on the year.
Cal State Fullerton junior Candice Baker (Buena Park, CA) picked up a pair of victories against opposition from the Big 10 Conference and received Big West Softball Pitcher of the Week accolades for her efforts.
The 5-8 right-hander posted her third straight game with 10 or more strikeouts when she fanned 10 Wildcats in a 6-3 win over No. 16 Northwestern on Thursday. She retired 14 straight NU hitters before allowing a couple of runs in the seventh with the game already out of reach.
On Saturday, Baker notched her third shutout of the year in a 2-0 win over Ohio State. She yielded just four hits while walking four and striking out five. She stranded eight Buckeyes on the basepaths as her record improved to 13-5 on the season.
For the week, Baker went 2-0 with a 1.50 ERA, allowing three runs and striking out 15 in 14.0 innings of work. She also limited the opposition to just a .176 batting average.
