Pacific's Koniarski Goes 3-0 In Singles, Beats Foe From Second-Ranked Pepperdine

Pacific freshman Tim Koniarski (Bad Abbach, Germany) posted a 3-0 record in singles play, including a win over an opponent from the second-ranked team in the nation, Pepperdine, as he earned Big West Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week honors.

The Tigers dropped a 6-1 decision to Pepperdine on Saturday, but it was Koniarski's play at the No. 3 position that was the bright spot. He defeated Richard Johnson 7-5, 6-4, despite moving up from his usual No. 4 spot in the order.

Koniarski also captured wins over opponents from Bradley and Dartmouth. He defeated BU's Matt Metully 6-2, 6-1 and then posted a 6-4, 6-3 win over Dartmouth's Raj Shrestha. The Tigers went on to defeat the Braves 7-0 and knocked off the 75th-ranked Big Green 6-1.

UC Irvine's Bernhard Extends Winning Streak To Five Straight

UC Irvine sophomore Becky Bernhard (Roseville, CA) extended her winning streak at No. 1 singles to five straight matches and captured her second consecutive Big West Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week award.

Bernhard led the No. 45-ranked Anteaters to a 1-1 week, with a 6-1 win over No. 42 Nebraska and a 5-2 loss to No. 36 Purdue. Against Kim Hartmann, the nation's 63rd-ranked singles player, Bernhard rolled to a 6-1, 6-4 victory over the Huskers No. 1. She also defeated Hala Sufi of the Boilermakers 6-3, 6-3.

At No. 3 doubles, Bernhard teamed with Ashley Siddall to defeat Nebraska's Ewelina Skaza and Ellinor Zugner 8-4. The duo lost 8-6 to Stephanie Wooten and Brittany Minna of Purdue for Bernhard's only setback of the week.
