Pacific's Vestli Goes 2-1 At No. 1 Singles To Capture Men's Tennis Honor
Pacific senior Jorgen Vestli (Hamar, Norway) garnered Big West Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week honors as he posted a 2-1 record for the Tigers at No. 1 singles.
Vestli began the week with a 6-7 (4), 6-3, 10-8 victory over Arizona State's Ryan McBride on Friday. He then defeated Northern Arizona's Jeff Morys 7-5, 6-3 on Saturday. Vestli, who began the season with four straight victories at No. 1 singles, suffered his first setback when he dropped a 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 decision to No. 18 Roger Matalonga of Arizona on Sunday. The Tigers lost 5-2 to the No. 57 Sun Devils, beat the Lumberjacks 6-1 and fell 6-1 to the No. 58 Wildcats.
At No. 1 doubles, Vestli teamed with Vladimir Zdravkovic to go 2-1 on the week. The duo was victorious over NAU's Henrik Lilja and Gareth Ducray by an 8-1 score and topped UA's Jeff Groslimond and Claudio Christen 8-3.
Pacific's Kostenko Posts Undefeated Week To Earn Women's Tennis Honor
Pacific senior Natalia Kostenko (Rostov-on Don, Russia) was selected Big West Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week after going 2-0 at both No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles, helping the Tigers to team victories over Hawai'i and UC Davis.
Kostenko claimed a 6-2, 6-3 win against Kana Aikawa of Hawai'i on Monday as the team won by a 7-0 shutout. She also defeated UCD's Ally Muller 6-3, 5-7, 12-10 in Saturday's 5-2 triumph.
In doubles, Kostenko paired up with Jolanta Twarowska to defeat the Rainbow Wahine team of Aikawa and Samantha Cappella 8-1, then crushed the Aggie duo of Muller and Nancy Mok 8-0.
