Cal Poly's Nguyen Wins Third in a Row at No. 1 Singles
Cal Poly senior John Nguyen (Anaheim, CA) earned Big West Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week accolades after beating his No. 1 singles opponent from nationally ranked UNLV.
Nguyen earned a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 win over Joel Kielbowicz for Cal Poly's lone point of the match against the 59th-ranked Rebels. He also teamed with Brett Van Linge to record an 8-5 win over Kielbowicz and David Campbell.
Nguyen has won six matches in a row for Cal Poly, including three apiece at singles and doubles.
Long Beach State's Grady Dominates In Singles and Doubles
Long Beach State freshman Hannah Grady (Coventry, England) garnered Big West Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week honors with a pair of convincing wins at No. 1 singles. She lost just one game in four sets for the week.
Grady helped the 49ers earn a 6-1 Big West victory over Cal State Northridge, downing Silvia Gutierrez 6-0, 6-0. She also defeated Kana Aikawa of Hawai'i 6-0, 6-1 to help LBSU to its fifth straight win. The 49ers beat UH 7-0.
Doubles play was successful for Grady as well. She teamed with two different partners at the No. 2 position and recorded victories. Grady and Jessica Weeks edged out Canna Furuta and Kanykey Koichumanova of Cal State Northridge by an 8-6 score, then joined forces with Krystina Katayama to defeat the Hawai'i duo of Julia Sandborn and Erin Katayama 8-3.
