Pacific's Vestli Earns Second Straight Men's Honor
Pacific senior Jorgen Vestli (Hamar, Norway) took home Big West Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week honors for the second straight week as he helped the Tigers to a solid victory over conference foe UC Irvine.
Vestli defeated Mustafa Ulukan of the Anteaters 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 singles in Pacific's 5-2 team victory.
At No. 1 doubles, Vestli teamed with Vladimir Zdravkovic to dispatch the UCI duo of Ulukan and Trevor Dobson 8-2. Vestli and Zdravkovic have now won three straight matches in the No. 1 spot for the Tigers.
Long Beach State's Bengson, UC Riverside's Sakhakorn Share Women's Honor
Long Beach State sophomore Stephanie Bengson (Albion Park, NSW, Australia) and UC Riverside freshman Yasaman Sakhakorn (Saugus, CA) were named co-recipients of Big West Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week as both players fared well from the No. 3 singles position.
Bengson helped the 49ers to a 7-0 victory versus Cal State Fullerton with her triumph over Mai-Ly Tran, 6-3, 6-2. She also defeated Loyola Marymount's Erin Ivey 6-4, 6-0 in LBSU's 6-1 win over the Lions.
In doubles action, Bengson and Rachael Porsz won both of their matches at the No. 3 spot. The duo defeated CSF's Ashley Dunbar and Cheyenne Inglis 8-3 and LMU's Patrycia Hubl and Sladjana Kos 8-4.
Sakhakorn won both of her singles matches as well. She defeated Cal Poly Pomona's Renee Paquillo 7-5, 6-4 as the Highlanders went on to the 7-0 team win over the Broncos. In a 6-1 loss to No. 63 San Diego, Sakhakorn collected the Highlanders' lone point after toppling Lauren Perl 7-6, 7-6.
With partner Catrisha Cabanilla at No. 3 doubles, Sakhakorn won 8-2 over the Cal Poly Pomona duo of Erica Lin and Whitney Shryock. After moving up to the No. 2 position, Sakhakorn and new partner H.R. Espiritu fell 8-1 to the Torero duo of Jenny Brown and Helene Lindstrand for the only setback of the week.
