UC Santa Barbara's Thorstensen Helps Team to Upset of No. 63 BYU
UC Santa Barbara freshman Carsten Thorstensen (Drobak, Norway) garnered Big West Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week honors after going 2-0 in singles and helping his team to an upset of a nationally ranked foe.
Thorstensen won his match at No. 5 singles over BYU's Jose Lechuga by a 7-6, 6-3 score. His win helped the Gauchos rally from behind to defeat the No. 63-ranked Cougars 4-3 on Monday. Although UCSB dropped a 6-1 decision to No. 20 USC on Tuesday, Thorstensen notched the team's only point with a 2-6, 6-4, 10-8 victory over Garrett Snyder at the No. 4 spot.
Pacific's Mrazovic Unbeaten In Three Singles Matches To Earn Honor
Pacific junior Vana Mrazovic (Belgrade, Serbia & Montenegro) collected Big West Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week honors for her strong play at the No. 2 singles position, winning all three of her matches for the Tigers.
Mrazovic began the week with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Northern Arizona's Julie Schmandt to spur the Tigers to a 6-1 team victory on Thursday. The following day, the Tigers took on No. 59 Arizona and Mrazovic tallied the team's lone point with a 7-6, 2-6, 8-6 win over Kasia Jakowlew. Mrazovic finished out the week by defeating Chloe Bihag of Hawai'i 6-0, 6-2 to help the Tigers to a 7-0 sweep.
At No. 1 doubles, Mrazovic teamed up with Jolanta Twarowska to win two out of three matches. The duo defeated Northern Arizona's Katie Schurr and Susan McClelland 8-2 and knocked off the Hawai'i team of Kana Aikawa and Samantha Cappella 8-4.
