Pacific's Karen Dawkins and UC Riverside's Kemie Nkele guided their teams to 2-1 records this week to earn Big West Women's Basketball Co-Player of the Week honors, for the week ending Dec. 3. This is Dawkins second award of the young season, while Nkele grabs her first of the year, fifth overall.
The 6-1 forward posted three consecutive double-doubles to lead the Tigers to a 2-1 record that included their first road win since Dec. 30, 2004, snapping a 25-game winless streak on the road. In the road win against St. Mary's, Dawkins posted a career-high 26 points on a career-best 11 made field goals. Giving up four inches to Amber Sprague of San Diego, the Colorado Springs, Colo., native was still able to post 16 points and grab 10 rebounds. On the week, she hit on 28-of-44 shots for 63.6%.
The Highlanders, who got off on a sluggish start, found their winning ways this week as they went 2-1 with the help of junior forward Kemie Nkele. Against Wisconsin, Nkele recorded 13 points and seven rebounds to help UC Riverside hand the Badgers their first loss of the season. Over the weekend UCR competed in the Nugget Classic in Reno, Nev., where the Highlanders fell to Auburn before downing host Nevada, 73-70, with a buzzer-beater from Nkele to claim the victory. In the second half of the Wolfpack matchup, the San Diego, Calif., native missed just one shot to score 18 points and help UCR rally from a 14-point deficit.
For the week, she shot 56.4 % from the floor and went 7-for-8 from the charity line. With her 19th career 20-plus point game against Nevada (26 points, 6 rebounds), Nkele moved into 10th place on UCR’s scoring list and is just five points away from 1,000 career points.
UC Riverside returns home to the Student Recreation Center to entertain Pepperdine (12/6) and Drake (12/10), while Pacific continues to test its luck on the road as they visit Northern Arizona (12/7) and Southern Utah (12/9).
