UC Irvine goalkeeper Kenny Schoeni (Cincinnati, Ohio/Vanderbilt University) helped the Anteaters keep pace in the race for the Big West championship with a pair of solid efforts on the way to his first Player of the Week honor.
The senior transfer earned two shutouts last week for the 28th-ranked Anteaters, a 2-0 win over UC Riverside and a scoreless tie against a redhot Cal Poly club. He posted seven saves for the week, six of them coming in the match against the Mustangs, and lowered his goals against average to 1.00.
Schoeni, who transferred to UCI when the Vanderbilt program was disbanded, tied the single-season school record with seven shutouts and is tied for sixth all-time in Anteaters history in the same category. His goals against average is third on the single-season list and would be the best ever at UCI.
