Cal Poly opened Big West play with a 3-0 start for the first time in school history, thanks enlarge part to the talents of outside hitter Alicia Waller. Her impressive 4.78 kills per game and 2.89 digs per game average earned her Big West Women's Volleyball Player of the Week honors, for the week ending Oct. 1.
In the 3-1 win over UC Irvine, Waller tallied 18 kills for a .137 hitting percentage. She went on to add 12 digs, three blocks and two service aces. The following night in the five-game victory over defending Big West co-champion Long Beach State, the Cypress, Calif., native tied her collegiate high in kills with 25, while collecting 14 digs and three blocks.
She led Cal Poly in kills and digs in both matches, while registering her team-leading 10th and 11th double-doubles of the year. Her 4.78 kills per game average over the two matches is 0.72 higher than her season average of 4.06, which ranks her second in the conference.
The Mustangs, riding a four-match win streak, return home to host UC Riverside and Cal State Fullerton.
