Murphy Sets UC Riverside To Two More Tournament Wins

UC Riverside senior Kym Murphy (San Diego, CA/Our Lady of Peace HS) earned Big West Women’s Volleyball Player of the Week honors, helping the Highlanders extend their winning streak to nine straight matches after a 3-0 week. The setter averaged 11.73 assists, 0.64 service aces and 3.09 digs in an all-around effort.

Murphy ran the UCR offense effectively as the team hit .253 (186-65-479) for the week and picked up wins over Northeastern, San Jose State and SMU. The streak of nine straight is the longest in UCR’s Division I era, surpassing the total of eight set last year.

In a five-game win over Northeastern, Murphy tallied 50 assists and a season-high 18 digs. She added six kills and hit .313 (6-1-16) to aid the Highlander cause.

The Highlanders then participated in the Hawthorn Suites Fullerton Classic over the weekend and Murphy carved out a spot on the all-tournament team. She had 43 assists, nine digs and a pair of service aces in a sweep of San Jose State and directed the UCR offense to a crisp .328 (61-19-128) hitting percentage. The Highlanders also swept SMU, as Murphy handed out 36 assists with seven digs and three service aces. She notched a team-high seven aces over the three contests.
