Guppy’s Saves Keep Cal State Northridge Unbeaten

Freshman Kevin Guppy (Chino Hills, CA/Chino Hills HS) made spectacular saves, posted a pair of shutouts and was named to an all-tournament team, as garnered Big West Men’s Soccer Player of the Week honors. The netminder’s solid play was one of the main reasons the Matadors remained unbeaten on the year.

Guppy had shutouts against Dartmouth (3-0) and Stanford (1-0) while posting a goals against average of 0.31. He barely labored in the Labor Day blanking of the Big Green, needing to make only one save for his first career solo shutout.

His workload increased drastically at the adidas/Cal Legacy Classic where No. 19 Cal State Northridge faced Pac-10 schools Stanford and No. 8 California. He recorded his second straight shutout against the Cardinal, but two of his four saves were made from point-blank range in the 38th and 52nd minutes. He allowed his first goal of the year in a 1-1 tie against California, but prevented further damage with a diving stop off a Golden Bear shot early in the contest, then struck again in double overtime with a match-saving stop to keep the game tied.
