Junior Sharon Day helped Cal Poly to a solid start to the 2005 season, scoring game-winning goals in triumphs over Purdue and Detroit. She earned Big West Women's Soccer Player of the Week recognition for her efforts.
Junior Sharon Day (Costa Mesa, CA/Costa Mesa HS) scored both game-winning goals to lead Cal Poly to the Boilermaker Challenge Cup championship and garner Big West Women's Soccer Player of the Week honors.
Day was named the Most Valuable Offensive Player as the Mustangs recorded wins over host Purdue (1-0) and Detroit (3-0). In Friday's season-opener against the Boilermakers, Day accounted for the only tally of the game in the 76th minute. Day latched onto a loose ball in front of the net that had deflected off several defenders from a corner kick, and her short shot from near the goal line gave the Mustangs the shutout win.
In Sunday's championship versus the Titans, Day took six of the Mustangs' 15 shots and opened the scoring in the 58th minute. She took a pass from Jennifer Wesser across the front of the goal and redirected it into the right side of the net for what proved to be the game-winner.
Day scored 11 goals and one assist to lead Cal Poly in scoring last year.
