Hejna Continues Torrid Hitting For UC Santa Barbara
UC Santa Barbara sophomore Jessica Hejna (Orange, CA/El Modena HS) provided a lift for the offense as her swing ended two games in the series sweep of Cal State Northridge, garnering her Big West Player of the Week for her display on offense.
The outfielder batted a robust .636 (7-for-11) with six runs scored and four RBI for the week, raising her average in Big West games to a sizzling .429. She had two doubles and a home run to go along with a pair of walks as the Gauchos continued their late season run.
Hejna was instrumental in UCSB’s 7-6, 10-inning victory in game one of the series. She scored the game-tying run in the seventh to send the game into extra innings, then notched a game-winning single in the 10th to complete UCSB’s comeback from a three-run deficit. She went 2-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and an RBI in that game.
Marzan Picks Up Two Wins And A Save Against UC Davis
Cal State Fullerton junior Marissa Marzan (Fresno, CA/Arizona) figured in all three decisions for the victorious Titans in a sweep of UC Davis, propelling her to a second Big West Pitcher of the Week honor this season.
Marzan was a workhorse in going the distance the final two games of the series and mopping up with her first career save in the opener. She finished the week with a 2-0 record and 0.88 ERA, allowing just seven hits and two runs in 16.0 innings of work. Marzan also struck out 17 batters while holding the Aggies to a .137 average.
The right-hander worked overtime in game two of Saturday’s doubleheader as the Titans scored twice in the top of the eighth for the 2-0 victory. Marzan scattered just three hits and fanned 10 batters. In Sunday’s start, she posted another complete game effort, allowing four hits and two runs in a 5-2 triumph. She tallied another seven strikeouts in that appearance. Marzan got the save in the series opener, tossing the final inning of a come-from-behind 5-4 victory. Only two of the seven hits she allowed on the week went for extra bases.
