Long Beach State's Tyler, Cal Poly's Nelson Parlay Stellar Efforts Into Weekly Honors

Long Beach State’s Tyler Slugs Way To Weekly Honor
Long Beach State freshman Lacy Tyler (La Mirada, CA/La Mirada HS) earned Big West Player of the Week after a power surge resulted in her first career intercollegiate home runs and two wins in three games for the 49ers over conference rival Pacific.

The shortstop discovered her power swing as four of her five hits for the series went for extra bases, including three home runs and a double. She batted .556 (5-for-9) with four runs scored and eight RBI for the week.

Tyler propelled the 49ers to an 11-2 series-opening win Saturday with a pair of home runs, including a grand slam in an eight-run fourth inning. She also opened the scoring with a solo shot in the second. She finished the first game of the doubleheader 2-for-3 with two runs scored and five RBI.

She continued her hot hitting in the second game of the twinbill with another multi-hit effort, going 2-for-3 with a run scored in a 4-3 loss. In the series finale Sunday, Tyler again went deep as she slammed a three-run homer in the third inning to lead Long Beach State to an 11-3 victory.

Cal Poly’s Nelson Shuts Down UC Davis In Two Appearances
Cal Poly senior Eva Nelson (Salinas, CA/Salinas HS) collected Big West Pitcher of the Week accolades after keeping UC Davis scoreless in her 10-plus innings of work and picking up a pair of wins.

Nelson allowed just three hits in 10.2 innings, walking only two and striking out 13. She threw a one-hit shutout in a 10-0 win in Saturday’s first game of a doubleheader that was shortened to five innings due to the mercy rule.

She came on in relief in the Sunday’s series finale with the Mustangs clinging to a 3-2 lead. She then thwarted any attempts of an Aggie comeback with 5.2 innings of two-hit ball, striking out four.
