Cal Poly's Myers and Nelson Nab Weekly Softball Awards

Myers Helps Cal Poly Extend Winning Streak to 10
Cal Poly senior Erin Myers (Redding, CA/Foothill HS) earned Big West Player of the Week honors for the second straight week as she led the Mustangs to a 5-0 record, including a series sweep over conference foe Utah State that extended the Mustang winning streak to 10 games.

The catcher batted .533 (7-for-13) for the week and smashed her seventh home run of the season, which also is her career total. She recorded a hit in each of the five games and had an RBI in four of them.

Myers went 2-for-5 with two RBI in a doubleheader sweep of St. Francis College on Monday. She started out the Utah State series in fine fashion, scoring the winning run in a 5-3 victory in game one of a doubleheader. She finished that game 2-for-3 and added an RBI. She had her second multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 in a 2-0 win. In the series finale on Saturday, Myers belted a fourth inning solo homer in a 2-0 victory.

Myers owns a 10-game hitting streak and is batting .556 (15-for-27) with seven runs scored and 13 RBI during that span.

Cal Poly’s Nelson Throws Perfect Game Against Utah State
Cal Poly senior Eva Nelson (Salinas, CA/Salinas HS) garnered Big West Pitcher of the Week honors after tossing her first career perfect game in a 2-0 win over Utah State. It was the second of two shutouts on the week for the right-hander, who improved to 8-6 on the year with the two victories.

Nelson began the week on Monday with a one-hit shutout of St. Francis College in a 13-0 romp. She struck out eight batters in the five-inning game shortened by the mercy rule. She then threw Cal Poly’s first perfect game since Desarie Knipfer in 1998 against Toledo, shutting down Utah State in the second game of Friday’s doubleheader. She fanned eight batters again to bring her total to 16 strikeouts for the week.

Nelson is 8-6 with a 1.83 ERA for the season, and has struck out 98 in 92.0 innings pitched.
