Myers Uses Deep Ball To Help Cal Poly Sweep UC Riverside
Cal Poly senior Erin Myers (Redding, CA/Foothill HS) garnered Big West Player of the Week honors after a solid series at the plate propelled the Mustangs to a conference-opening series sweep over UC Riverside.
The catcher's contributions included a pair of home runs, both of which broke open closely contested games. She hit a three-run bomb to put the Mustangs up 4-0 and they went on to win by that score in game two of a doubleheader on Saturday. On Sunday, Myers blasted a third inning grand slam to turn a 2-1 deficit into a 5-2 lead. Cal Poly went on to win 9-3 . She went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and five RBI in the series finale. She combined to go 3-for-6 with three RBI in the Saturday doubleheader.
Myers increased her home run total to six on the season, which also happens to be her career total in her fourth season with the Mustang program. She went 5-for-8 (.625) with eight RBI for the week.
UC Santa Barbara's Sommer Hurls Two Complete Games
UC Santa Barbara sophomore Lindsey Sommer (San Diego, CA/Serra HS) was the winning pitcher for the Gauchos in two close games at the San Diego State Classic, leading her to Big West Pitcher of the Week accolades.
The right-hander tossed complete games in the victories over Georgia Southern and Longwood by identical 3-2 scores. Herrin allowed just four hits and two runs (one earned) while striking out six against the Eagles. The Gauchos went extra frames in an 11-inning win over the Lancers, and Sommer was up to the challenge, going the distance with nine strikeouts. She scattered just five hits and gave up just one earned run as the Gauchos won in the 11th on a steal of home.
For the week, Herrin posted a 1.00 ERA with 15 strikeouts in 18.0 innings of work.
