Cal Poly freshman Kylie Atherstone (Chico, CA/Pleasant Valley HS) and Long Beach State senior Erika Chidester (Covina, CA/South Hills HS) were named Big West Women's Volleyball Co-Athletes of the Week as both players helped their teams post huge victories in conference play.
Atherstone, a 6-1 outside hitter, averaged 4.25 kills, 1.50 blocks, 0.62 service aces and 1.62 digs per game to help the Mustangs post road victories over No. 23 Long Beach State (3-2) and UC Irvine (3-0). It marked the first time since 1986 that Cal Poly beat the 49ers on the road. Atherstone followed that up with 14 kills, five digs and five blocks in a sweep of the Anteaters.
Chidester, a 6-3 middle blocker, was productive in LBSU's loss to Cal Poly, but played spectacular in a convincing sweep of first place UC Santa Barbara. She posted a season-high 18 kills and hit .244 (18-7-45) against the Mustangs, adding five digs and two blocks. She stepped her play to lift the 49ers over the Gauchos, stopping a seven-match losing streak to their rival. In that contest, Chidester slammed 15 kills with no errors on 32 swings for a .469 hitting percentage. She added 14 digs to post her fourth double-double of the season. For the week, Chidester averaged 4.13 kills, 2.38 digs and 0.88 blocks while hitting at a.338 (33-7-77) clip.
