UC Santa Barbara junior Janine Sandell (London, England/Deer Valley (AZ) HS) earned Big West Women’s Volleyball Player of the Week for the second time in the last three weeks after another powerful display of offense propelled the Gauchos to two more conference victories.
The 5-10 outside hitter hit .291 (53-16-127) and tallied her seventh and eighth double-doubles of the season as the Gauchos defeated Cal State Northridge (3-1) and Pacific (3-2). UCSB extended its winning streak to six and maintained its half-match lead in the Big West standings.
Against the Matadors, Sandell posted 24 kills and 14 digs to go along with two service aces and two blocks. She hit .262 (24-8-61) in the match.
Sandell stepped up her play even further on Saturday in a win over the rival Tigers. Her 29 kills was the second-highest total in her career and second-best by a Gaucho in the rally scoring era. She also hit efficiently, tallying a .318 (29-8-66) hitting percentage. Sandell’s 15 digs and four blocks also helped UCSB extend its winning streak at home against conference opponents to 10 in a row.
Sandell finished the week just two kills shy of 1,000 for her career.
