UC Riverside's Renee Scachetti (above) and Long Beach State's Dana Farquhar led their teams to big victories to pick up crucial points in the Big West standings.
Long Beach State freshman Dana Farquhar (Redlands, CA/Arrowhead Christian HS) and UC Riverside senior Renee Scachetti (Torrance, CA/Bishop Montgomery HS) were named Big West Women's Soccer Co-Players of the Week after leading their teams to impressive victories and to the top of the conference standings. Both schools lead the Big West with nine points two weeks into conference play.
Farquhar, a midfielder/forward, scored two goals against No. 20 Cal Poly to key a 4-2 upset of the 2004 Big West Tournament champion. It was just the second victory over a top 25 opponent in school history. Farquhar netted her first tally just 3:22 into the match and sealed the victory with another goal in the 77th minute. Those were her first two goals of the season. Farquhar followed up that performance with the game-winning assist as the 49ers knocked off 2004 Big West regular season co-champion UC Santa Barbara 3-1 on Sunday. Her cross from the right side found the head of fellow freshman Hayley Bolt for the clincher in the 56th minute.
Scachetti had a foot in all three UC Riverside goals, including the game-winners against Pacific and Cal State Northridge to earn her share of the award. The midfielder tallied a goal on a header to give the Highlanders a 2-0 lead over the Tigers and an eventual 2-1 victory. She also had an assist on UCR's first goal, increasing her total to a career-high five helpers on the season. Against the Matadors, Scachetti rifled a 20-yard left-footed shot for the game's only goal. Scachetti has scored at least one goal in eight of UCR's nine victories and has accounted for five game-winners.
