UC Santa Barbara defender Tony Lochhead (Tauranga, New Zealand/New Zealand Secondary) anchored a stingy defense that led to a pair of victories over ranked opponents and the UConn adidas Classic Tournament title, earning the senior Big West Men’s Soccer Player of the Week honors.
The Gauchos defeated No. 21 Seton Hall 2-0 and No. 30 Connecticut 1-0 to improve to 4-0-0 on the season, with all four wins coming by shutout. Lochhead’s work in the middle was crucial, as the opposition averaged just 3.0 shots on goal per game and 10.5 shots overall. Lochhead was the centerpiece of a defense that kept Seton Hall, averaging 24.0 shots per game through its first three contests, to just 10 for the game.
In the championship match against the host Huskies, Lochhead helped silence a offense that had scored four goals the previous night. The four consecutive shutouts to start the season is a Gaucho school record.
