Thorp, Cervenka Lead Long Beach State To 7-0 Week

Long Beach State senior Arleigh Thorp (Murrieta, CA/Murrieta HS) garnered Big West Player of the Week accolades as her offensive firepower guided the 49ers to a 7-0 record, including five straight wins at the Capital Classic.

Thorp hit .435 (10-for-23) with seven runs scored and 10 RBI, helping the 49ers run their winning streak to nine games. She hit a grand slam against Tennessee State and slammed a two-run homer in a 5-4 victory versus Wisconsin. The left fielder went 4-for-4 with two RBI in game two of a doubleheader sweep over Canisius to start the week.

She also went 3-for-3 in stolen bases and had at least one RBI in four of seven games. The 49ers are now 27-7 on the season.

Long Beach State junior Meredith Cervenka (La Crescenta, CA/Crescenta Valley HS) was named Big West Pitcher of the Week after becoming the fifth player in school history to toss a perfect game.

The right-hander accomplished the feat in a 3-0 win against Iowa, striking out five. She is the first Long Beach State player since 1991 to throw a perfect game. It also marked the second no-hitter of her career.

Cervenka also tossed shutouts against Canisius and Tennessee State. She allowed only three hits and struck out nine against the Golden Griffins. Against the Lady Tigers, Cervenka pitched 4.0 innings, allowing only one hit and striking out three in a 13-0 mercy rule victory.

For the week, Cervenka went 3-0 with a 0.00 ERA and fanned 17 batters in 18.0 innings of work.
