Cal State Northridge junior Kia Fennell (Diamond Bar, CA/Diamond Ranch HS) and Long Beach State junior Marcel Torres (Diamond Bar, CA/UCLA) were selected Big West Co-Pitchers of the Week as both hurlers collected three victories.
Fennell went 3-1 with a 1.20 ERA at the Worth Invitational against high caliber competition, including a win over No. 25 Oregon State. Fennell struck out 20 in 23.3 innings. The right-hander opened the tournament with a seven-hit shutout of Oklahoma State in a 5-0 victory. After getting the loss against No. 4 California, she tossed 4.0 innings of three-hit relief, allowing one unearned run and striking out five in a 10-5 victory over Michigan State in eight innings. Fennell then earned a complete game win over the nationally ranked Beavers, yielding five hits and two runs (one earned) while striking out six.
Torres was named the Most Outstanding Pitcher of the Kipa Aloha Tournament in Hawaii. She posted a 3-0 record with a 0.00 ERA in wins over Southern Illinois, College of Charleston and Hawai'i. The right-hander tossed a one-hit shutout against the Salukis, then struck out a season-high nine in five innings against College of Charleston. Torres came back in the championship game against Hawai'i, fanning seven batters while allowing six hits and an unearned run in a 3-1 final. Torres lowered her season ERA to 0.77 and did not allow an extra base hit to her opponents.
