UC Santa Barbara guard Josh Davis (Sacramento, CA/Elk Grove HS) earned the distinction of being the first 2004-05 Big West Men’s Basketball Player of the Week after establishing career highs in points and steals in a solid season-opening road win.
Davis, a 6-5 guard, scored 18 points and added four steals in the Gauchos’ 80-72 overtime victory over San Diego State on Friday. He also chipped in five rebounds and three assists in 38 minutes of action. The junior made 7-of-10 shots from the floor, including an outstanding 4-of-5 from beyond the three-point arc. The Gauchos suited up just nine players for the game, playing without two starters and two other key bench performers.
He also was instrumental on defense in shutting down Aztec forward Chris Walton, who went 0-for-4 from the field with no points and one rebound in 29 minutes.
