UC Santa Barbara forward Drew McAthy (Huntington Beach, CA/Huntington Beach HS) earned Big West Men's Soccer Player of the Week honors after setting a new school record in a 1-0 victory over Cal State Fullerton.
McAthy's penalty kick goal in the 27th minute stood up as the Gauchos snapped Cal State Fullerton's three-match home unbeaten streak. The senior earned the free opportunity when a Titan defender failed to make a routine tackle on him, then touched the ball in an attempt to get up. McAthy's goal was his seventh game-winner of the season.
With the goal, McAthy became UCSB's career goals scored leader with 47. He surpassed Scott Grassinger's 21-year old mark of 46 in the process. McAthy's accomplishment also garnered him a spot on the College Soccer News National Team of the Week.
