UC Riverside goalkeeper Tawny Poggio (Santa Ana, CA/Mater Dei HS) and UC Santa Barbara midfielder Darci Gwartz (Yorba Linda, CA/El Dorado HS) were selected Big West Women’s Soccer Co-Player of the Week recipients after leading their respective sides to success in non-conference and conference play.
Poggio posted a 0.37 goals against average in three matches as the Highlanders remained unbeaten after going 2-0-1 for the week. She made a season-high seven saves in a 3-0 road shutout of Southern Utah on Monday, keeping the score 0-0 until UCR netted three goals in the final 15 minutes. In Friday’s Big West opener against Cal State Fullerton, Poggio weathered a barrage of Titan shots to post a new season-high 11 saves in 110 minutes of a 0-0 tie. On Sunday, the sophomore played the first half against Air Force, making two saves and allowing just her second goal in 829:46 minutes this year. UCR won the game, 3-2.
Gwartz played a big role in UC Santa Barbara’s 2-0 start to Big West play as she amassed four assists in the two contests. In a 4-1 win over Long Beach State on Friday, she tallied three helpers, including the game-winner. The three assists was the second-most ever by a Gaucho in a single game. She had another assist in a 2-0 win versus UC Irvine on Sunday and sprinkled in a pair of shots.
