Cal State Northridge’s Sims, UC Santa Barbara's Jones Power Teams To Conference Wins

Cal State Northridge forward Willie Sims (Los Angeles, CA/Reseda HS) and UC Santa Barbara forward Neil Jones (Auckland, New Zealand/Otago University) garnered Big West Men’s Soccer Co-Player of the Week honors after impressive offensive performances helped their teams to sweeps of conference competition.

Sims totalled three goals in two matches as the Matadors defeated Cal Poly (3-0) on Wednesday and UC Irvine (3-2) on Saturday. Against the Mustangs, Sims scored the game-winner on an incredible goal, eluding several defenders, making a spin move and firing a shot past the goalkeeper for an unassisted tally. The sophomore added a pair of goals on five shots against the Anteaters to increase his season total to nine. It marked the second two-goal game of the season and fifth of his career.

Jones played a role in six of UC Santa Barbara’s nine goals for the week, as the Gauchos defeated Cal State Fullerton (4-3) on Wednesday and Cal Poly (5-1) on Saturday. He accounted for two goals and four assists in the two matches. One of his three assists versus the Titans was the game-winner in double overtime and his sixth goal of the season tied the game in regulation. The senior scored his seventh goal of the season and added an assist in the Mustang win. He is now tied for sixth all-time in Gaucho history with 25 goals.
