UC Irvine outside hitter Kelly Wing (Murrieta, CA/Murrieta Valley HS) earned Big West Player of the Week honors for the fourth time this season as she continued her outstanding play against Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara.
Wing, a 5-11 junior, turned in a remarkable performance in a five-game win over Cal Poly on Friday. She erupted for a career-high 43 kills and hit a season-high .363 as the Anteaters rebounded from a two games to one deficit. The 43 kills set a UCI single-match record and was the highest number of kills by a Big West player since the rally scoring format was adopted in 2001. In the Cal Poly match, Wing totalled nine kills in the decisive game five, helping UCI snap a 15-match losing streak against the Mustangs. The win over the Mustangs was also the first for UCI head coach Charlie Brande.
Against UC Santa Barbara, Wing tallied 17 kills and 17 digs for her 11th consecutive double-double and 19th of the season. The Anteaters took a game off the Gauchos in The Thunderdome for the first time since the 1993 season.
For the week, Wing averaged 6.67 kills, 3.11 digs and 0.44 service aces per game while hitting .295 (60-21-132).
