• True freshman right-hander Lauryn Carranco went 2-0 in a pair of seven-inning outings as third-place CSUN swept UC San Diego on the road, garnering a third Big West Freshman of the Week distinction.

• Carranco pitched into the eighth frame of the Matadors’ 4-3 extra-inning victory to begin the set on Friday evening. The Clovis native and 2022 graduate of Clovis High School gave up three runs, two of them earned, on seven hits (all singles) and one walk, striking out four.

• Carranco then took a no-hitter into the sixth inning of Saturday’s 1-0 triumph, allowing two singles and two walks with seven strikeouts en route to a fifth complete game and second shutout this season. Carranco threw 209 pitches on the weekend, 139 for strikes, and improved to 8-7 with four straight wins over the last two weekends.

• Carranco is now tied with Makayla Medellin of Long Beach State, each at three Big West Freshman of the Week awards this season, with prior selections on April 10 and just last week on May 1. Teammate Isabella Alonso was the March 20 recipient to give CSUN a league-best four rookie awards for 2023.
