High School Northgate HS Nico Zeglin threw seven no-hit, shutout innings against visiting South Florida on Sunday to earn a first Big West Pitcher of the Week distinction. The right-hander struck out a career-high 13, the most in a single game around the league thus far, as the Dirtbags secured a fourth straight winning weekend heading into the finale later in the day. The first-year graduate transfer from Gonzaga handled the first 7.0 frames of the 8-0 victory before handing it off to Josh Haley, who allowed two ninth-inning singles while registering the final six outs. Zeglin issued a two-out walk in the fourth after a two-out hit-by-pitch around three strikeouts in the second, facing two batters over the minimum and finishing with a season-high 103 pitches thrown while improving to 2-1 on the year. The 7.0 innings were also a career best. Zeglin struck out the side in order in the fifth and retired the final 10 batters of the outing following that lone walk, with six punch-outs. Zeglin’s current ERA is 2.45, with the Walnut Creek product leading The Big West in strikeouts with 34. Zeglin is already LBSU’s second Big West Pitcher of the Week for 2023, following fellow newcomer Graham Osman on Feb. 20.
