High School Columbus North HS Kurt Nusterer played in two contests and five sets as No. 1 Hawai’i swept through its three-match trip across the country to North Carolina, averaging 3.00 points, 2.20 kills and 0.80 blocks per set and hitting .714 (11-1-4) to earn a first Big West Freshman of the Week honor. The redshirt freshman out of Indianapolis, Ind., and 2021 graduate of Columbus (Ind.) North High School, provided four kills and a first career ace and block assist in Thursday’s 3-0 win in front of a sold-out crowd at Belmont Abbey in Belmont, N.C. With UH again sitting a bulk of its starts on Saturday at a second straight Conference Carolinas foe in Barton College in Wilson, N.C., Nusterer drew a first collegiate start and collected seven kills on eight attempts without an error (.875), to go along with three block assists and another ace for 9.5 points. Nusterer began the week with two matches and two sets played. The 6-foot-9 middle blocker is the Rainbow Warriors’ first Big West Freshman of the Week since current teammate and junior All-American Spyros Chakas was the honoree back on March 1, 2021.
