In third-year Big West member UC San Diego’s lone action of the past week, sixth-year senior Emily Cangelosi poured in career highs of 25 points and seven made three-pointers to lead the Tritons to a win over Portland and earn a first Big West Player of the Week award.

Fourteen of Cangelosi’s game-high 25 points came in the third quarter of Sunday night’s 85-76 triumph over the Pilots. The 14 points accounted for half of the Tritons’ haul as they outscored their opponent 28-23 to take a 13-point lead into the final period. The product of Agoura Hills shot 47 percent (8-of-17) from the field and 58 percent (7-of-12) from behind the arc, hitting both free throw attempts and adding three rebounds, two assists and a steal over 32 minutes.

Cangelosi’s heroics propelled UC San Diego (1-2) to its first win of the season in its 2022-23 home opener inside LionTree Arena. The Tritons had lost 91-48 at Portland to begin their 2021-22 campaign. The Pilots are picked to finish second in the West Coast Conference this season, garnering one of 10 first-place votes behind favorite Gonzaga.

Cangelosi’s previous single-game career bests were 17 points, four made triples and eight three-point attempts.

Cangelosi is UC San Diego’s second Big West weekly honoree in women’s basketball, following current teammate Sydney Brown back on Feb. 22, 2021.
