  • Redshirt freshman right-hander David Vizcaino fired eight shutout innings in a 14-4 victory at UC Riverside on Saturday, scattering two singles and striking out four without issuing a walk. In his first major college weekend start, it was the ‘Eaters’ longest outing of the season.
  • Vizcaino faced two batters over the minimum. The Saturday result clinched the series victory for fifth-place UC Irvine, with the host Highlanders grabbing a walk-off 3-2 decision in Sunday’s finale.
  • The first-year ‘Eater out of Riverside City College produced 1-2-3 frames in the first, third, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh. Vizcaino retired the first five UCR batters before a two-out single in the second, and then set down the next 17 in a row. No Highlander reached second base.
  • Vizcaino improved his win-loss record to 4-0 and lowered his season ERA down to 1.00. He has four starts among his seven appearances.
  • Vizcaino is a first-time Big West Pitcher of the Week. He is UC Irvine’s first pitcher selection this season and first since current teammate Nick Pinto on May 24, 2021. Fellow underclassmen Dub Gleed and Thomas McCaffrey have picked up field player awards previously in 2022.
