High School Bishop Alemany HS Third-year sophomore libero Mason Briggs was a defensive stalwart again for No. 2 Long Beach State in its two four-set victories over No. 4 Hawai’i at the Walter Pyramid. He provided 33 digs for an average of 4.13 per set. The native of Valencia registered a match-best 17 digs in Friday night’s initial meeting, with 28 errorless service receptions and one set assist. In Saturday’s rematch on ESPNU, Briggs tallied 16 more digs to share the match high, and committed just one error over 20 reception attempts. He added a career-high seven set assists. Briggs has a career-best 10 double-figure dig performances this season, including four in a row with the match high in each, and 22 for his college career. He has led the Beach in digs 13 times in 2022, and paces the squad with 188 digs on the year. ?Briggs is now a two-time Big West Defensive Player of the Week as a repeat honoree. Long Beach State is 16-3 with a season-high six straight wins, and sits alone atop The Big West standings at 5-1.
