Long Beach State right-handed pitcher Luis Ramirez helped the Dirtbags to a season-opening victory at No. 3 Mississippi State on Friday to earn his first career Big West weekly award.

The sophomore from East LA tossed six shutout innings to pick up the win in the 3-0 decision. He did not allow a hit in his scoreless outing and only two balls left the infield.

Ramirez totaled five strikeouts in 20 batters faced as the bullpen combined for the shutout. The Bulldogs hadn’t been shut out since April 17, 2021, a span of 34 games. That April loss to Ole Miss was the only time they got blanked on the scoreboard during their championships season.
