High School La Jolla Country Day UC San Diego’s Sumayah Sugapong recorded a second Big West Player of the Week honor of the season, and third career nod, after helping the Tritons to a 23-point road victory. The sophomore guard finished one point shy of a career high with 24 points on 45 percent shooting to go along with a new career benchmark of seven assists in the 81-58 victory at California Baptist on Saturday, UCSD’s lone game of the week. Sugapong also led the team in steals (3) and tallied one block as the Tritons forced 17 turnovers in the program’s first Division I victory over CBU. The San Diego product currently ranks first in The Big West in assists average (3.5) and third in steals average (2.27). As a team, UCSD is pacing the conference in turnovers forced per game (21.45) and rates 29th nationally in steals per game (12.2).
